Group B: Week 8 - "What Do Women Want?"

Greetings, scholars. Some of you have been doing very well with the blogs. Thank you!  :-)

This week, I'd like you to read, analyze, and hopefully, discuss an interesting poem with your groupmates.

Please complete the following assignment, based on the poem: TP-CASTT Poetry Analysis:

  • TITLE: Consider the title and make a reasonable prediction about what the poem is about.
  • PARAPHRASE: Translate the poem line by line (yes - line by line) into your own words on a literal level. Look for complete thoughts (sentences may be inverted) and look up unfamiliar words.
  • CONNOTATION: Examine the poem for meaning beyond the literal. Look for figurative language, imagery, symbolism, puns, and sound elements.
  • ATTITUDE/TONE: Notice the speaker’s tone and attitude. Humor? Sarcasm? Awe?
  • SHIFTS: Note any shifts or changes in speaker or attitude. Look for key words, time change, punctuation.
  • TITLE: Examine the title again, this time on an interpretive level.
  • THEME: Briefly state in your own words what the poem is about (subject), then what the poet is saying about the subject (theme).

Due: Friday, February 7th

  1. Title:I believe the poem is about someone trying to spread the word about what the author thinks women want.
    Paraphrase: She wants a dress
She wants it to be a bad quality dress
she wants it to fit badly
she doesn't want to take it off
she wants it to be what some might consider not socially acceptable
people shouldn't have to guess her intention
    walk down
pat the hardware and other stores
    with keys sparkling
    past a cheap café
past some probably dirty guys and pigs
    walk free
    won't be judged
    wants freedom of choice
    want it to prove
    other people's stereotypes
    to show she doesn't mind
    cares about her
she needs to find the dress
    like it is her
    (emphasis) like it is her
    through hardship
    it will become her
    it will be
what she wears even in death.
Connotation:tight, flimsy, tear, glittering, pigs=dirty, bones, skin
Attitude/Tone: She speaks passionately and with assurance in what she is saying.
Shifts: want dress bad, love-cries, tears it off
Title: It is what she wants and she in turn stereotypes that women in turn, all want what they want and they shouldn't have to worry about the opinions of others. She shows her hypocrisy in stereotyping women but is it false to claim to say people want what they want?
Theme: I believe the poem is about someone who wears or does what they want no matter what others will assume or judge. The theme of this poem is a defiant will against what others consider the norm and that no one should be afraid of the opposing judgments.

  2. I think the title is saying that the poem will be about something that woman want.
    she wants a red dress
she wants it flimsy and cheap
she wants it to be to tight, and she wants someone
to tear it off of her
she doesn't want sleeves, and she wants it backless
she wants it short so everyone can see what is underneath
she wants to walk past thriftys and the hardware store, and
see all the glittering keys in the window
past mr. and mrs. wong selling day old donuts in their café
she wants to go past the Guerra brothers
slinging pigs from the truck onto the dolly
hoisting the slick snouts over their shoulders
she wants to feel like she is the only woman on the planet
and she can have her pick of any guy she wants
she really wants that red dress
she wants it to confirm peoples thoughts that they already have about her
she wants people to know that she doesn't care what they say
when she wears it she will feel like she is wearing a different person or personality
she wants to wear it through everything from the births to the deaths
she wants to wear it like she is the dress and like she is going to die in the dress
she wants people to think the dress represents her and her soul.
The authors tone is serious and she represents desire for the dress.
I think the poem is about a girl who gets judged on what she wears and what she looks like and I think that people assume things about her without actually getting to know her so that is why she is wearing the dress to tell everyone that she doesn't care about what they think. it is shown that she doesn't care about what other people thin k about her when she says " I want it to confirm your worst fears about me".

  3. What do women want? I Think the poem would be about what women most desire or need in life
    she wants a red dress
    she wants it affordable
she wants it to fit like a glove
she wants it to show off her body
she wants everyone to see how great her features are
she wants to walk down the street past Thriftys and the hardware store to have all the guys look with the glittering keys to be her spotlight
she wants the donut shop owners to look at her with jealousy
she wants the brother to pause their hard work just to look at her
she wants to walk with confidence and knowing she can have who ever she wants
she wants to be good looking
she wants to confirm he sexuality and all of your naughty thought about her
she wants to play the guys like guys play girls
    she wants to break hearts
she wants to find the perfect dress that will change her life
change her image and what people think of her
she wants the dress to signify her appearance and have it be her signature look
she wants everyone to remember her the that red dress
the author uses descriptive words; flimsy, cheap, tight, sleeveless, and backless to describe the dress she wants but also describes her location of the busy street with donut owners, brothers who butcher, and men in shops while she day dreams of having someone tear the dress off her and how she wants to find it and know its perfect right when she picks it out. The author is also very excited and serious with a tone of flirtation. she trying to provoke a sexual image for herself but then changes her attitude about how she will feel once she is in the dress because towards the end of the poem she begins talking about feeling;I want to walk like I'm the only woman on earth and I can have my pick. I want that red dress bad. I want it to confirm your worst fears about me.
the theme of the poem is about what women's want to be perceived as, which in this case she wants to be perceived as confident, beautiful and sexy
